The martini is one of the most popular
mixed alcoholic beverages in the world. This iconic cocktail can be easily
customized to suit your taste and preference.
History – a beguiling concoction
The martini is a
classic drink that has been called the elixir of quietude by E. B. White, an
American writer. This cocktail packs a punch of gin and vermouth garnished with
an olive or a lemon twist.
The origin of
the cocktail is ambiguous. Several bartending guides that appeared during the last
quarter of 19th century mention cocktails that have ingredients and
names quite alike the present-day martini. The Bartenders' Manual of 1888 describes
a cocktail recipe that comprises of vermouth and Old Tom Gin in equal parts. According
to a popular theory the drink originated at the Occidental Hotel, in 1860, in
San Francisco from a cocktail called Martinez, named after a nearby town. Another theory suggests that the name martini
traces its roots to an Italian vermouth that was first produced under the brand
name of Martini & Rossi in 1863. Yet another theory considers the martini
to have the roots of its origin in the Marguerite Cocktail. This particular
cocktail consisted of a 2:1 mix of dry vermouth and Plymouth dry gin. The drink
is served with a bit orange bitters. Whatever be the origin of the martini,
this cocktail continues to be a popular drink world over.
